You're also spot on in suggesting that the personal low-budget marketing plan is often more effective than what publicists have the time to do at a big publishing house--I've been there and done that with both Random House and as an indie author, and now that my novel is being published next summer by Penguin, I intend to continue the hands-on marketing attempts. It isn't about the big book launch anymore. We should all have your savvy and perspective and recognize that book marketing has to be a layered effort, one small event after another, building awareness.
